Coin collecting can be an entertaining and inexpensive hobby. Starting small and expanding as time goes on is a one way to approach any new hobby, but especially so with coin collecting. The value of the coins someone collects will surely vary according to what he or she is able to find, from quarters and dimes to rarer coins that have been taken out of circulation, such as silver dimes. A good way to learn about this fascinating hobby is to read books on the subject, available in the hobby and self-interest sections at bookstores everywhere, or at the local library. Eventually, when someone gathers a collection of which they feel proud, they may want to get at least an estimate of the real value of their collection. The collection can be appraised at hobby shops by dealers who know coins, but should only be shown to someone trustworthy. Internet coin dealers with a good reputation are also an option. Be wary of those who charge more than a nominal fee for this service. The values are dependent on a lot of factors, including the date and other markings, the condition of the coin. These values may be adjusted for inflation. A true coin collector knows this, so coin collectors should not be taken in by someone who offers to buy the collection without a proper appraisal by an expert.
Unlike most hobbies, many of which become prohibitively expensive once someone starts buying all the necessary equipment, -- such as for motor sports or the acquisition of high-end items -- coin collecting is relatively cheap, and in some cases, free. Picking up coins throughout the day as one goes about his or her regular routine is a practical and free way to find unsuspecting rarities like buffalo nickels and pennies from the 1920's. For some, coin collecting can turn into more than just a hobby. It can become a small, lucrative business if a person travels in the right circles. An individual can auction off some of his or her less desired items at trade shows or on an Internet coin dealer auction. If desired, they can then reinvest that money in more valuable coins as they go along, then repeat the process. This is how many people turn their habit of collecting things into a source of income. This has been done historically with books and antiques, among other things. The art of collecting coins is being somewhat lost on a new generation, but a young person looking for a hobby can change that by picking up this timeless tradition. People of all ages can learn to appreciate collecting coins.
